    25 years ago, when I started my own strategy and leadership development company, I found myself in a large room facing 45 senior leaders from the London Borough of Newham.

    The goal of the session was audacious and simple: to regenerate and transform the future of the borough - one of the most deprived and run-down areas in the UK at that time, back in 1998.

    I couldn't shake my sense of imposter syndrome and the feeling I was out of my depth.

    But, that's how the 45 senior leaders felt too. I didn't fully understand that back then. I do now.

    We are all humbled facing our responsibility to make next year better than last year.

    Out of our depth is how we can all feel faced with a frightening, seemingly impossible goal.

    I now know my job is to lead people through doubt to belief, using rapid and highly engaging, interactive processes.

    On that day, 25 years ago, faced with a frighteningly huge transformational goal, one guy said we have so much derelict land we could host the olympics.

    Everyone laughed hysterically. Me too. What a crazy dream, right?
    14 years later, that crazy dream had brought in around £2 billion in regeneration funding for Newham and 900 million people from across the world were being dazzled by Danny Boyle's opening ceremony for the London 2012 Olympics.

     

    What can you dare dream possible?

     

    No gimmicks. No fads. Rapid, hi-octane, very direct, unconventional methods. Lots of heart, soul and attitude, and outstanding results

    If you think you can make hierarchical, top-downery work in a hybrid, modern workplace think again. Your people have been glued to a screen for years, and their values and what they want from life have changed. If you want to be world class you need to treat people as leaders not followers. You need to ask them to occassionally dress below the waist and spend a day together all in the same place at the same time doing the work.

    What's Possible?

    Whether you believe you can or believe you can't, life will prove you right. Personally, I'm a big fan of defiance when it comes to what's possible - things don't have to be the way they are. We have to start addressing what's going on around us, and be prepared to pull the chain and stop the train. Time for a reset. Time for a reboot. We all need to occassionally stop and re-imagine the business we are in, how it works, when and where it doesn't, where to stretch, feeling we belong...

    Stop Trying to Please Everyone

    We all have to overcome our addiction to approval; and you can't run a successful enterprise with the people around you applauding your every burp and fart. You will get judged whatever you do, so piss people off for doing what you believe in.

    SUCCESSAPPY

    Because we all love a crazy sounding concept, right? Hopefully, you will have worked out that Success and Happiness are two distinctly different things. Culturally, we are systematically and relentlessly marshalled towards success: power, status, money, brands, influencers, celebrity, winners & losers... it's exhausting. But we all drink from it. In 2023, expect to see happiness make it's long-overdue comeback. Can we ever have both? Yes we can.

    HOW not IF

    All manner of magic will begin to emerge when you COMMIT. It's as if the universe starts colluding with you. The sooner you stop talking about IF WE DO IT, the quicker you enlist the juiciest part of the human brain: our problem solving. Humans are the apex problem solvers on this planet. So, move the conversation on. ASK YOUR PEOPLE: HOW DO WE DO IT IN 2023?

    ME, YOU & US

    2023, up to our necks in ME, ME, ME. It's not always a bad thing; we need everyone bringing their unique and different flavour to the mix. BUT there are always 3 things in all human relationships: Me, You & Us. Leading, we take care of all 3. And it starts with Us. CATHEDRALISE the Us: WHY ARE WE HERE? WHAT ARE WE BRINGING? Real stories about the real difference you make to real people. It's why people will CHOOSE to follow you and go the extra mile. No amount of glossy corporate brochures can do this work for you, not in 2023.
